Early Childhood Education

High quality early childhood education has proven to be a great investment for our country and we believe that this is a necessary investment, which should not be passed up. Studies have shown that a strong focus on education for children under five has produced long-term benefits.

A well-known study found that people who were in a quality preschool program later in life earned up to $2,000 more each month than those who were not. Children who were in preschool programs usually graduate from high school, own homes, and have longer marriages.

Similar results are shown in other research. Children who have been in quality preschool programs are less likely to need special education, repeat grades, or get into trouble with the law.

Investing in early childhood education also makes economic sense. One expert believes that the return on investment will exceed 12%.

NEA President Reg Weaver tells us, “We know that children who attend full-day kindergarten are better prepared intellectually, socially, and psychologically than children who attend kindergarten for half-days. We know that attempting to repair reading skills in the fourth grade is far more expensive and risky than guaranteeing pre-reading skills in preschool and good beginning reading skills in kindergarten.”

Adult Learning Disabilities

by Patrick Hartell

You have to deal with a number of issues if you have a learning disability, even if that disability was diagnosed in the childhood. The issues will be different and many more in adulthood than they were in your childhood years. Hence you will have to find new ways to cope with these challenges and issues posed by the learning disability.

Most children plan on marrying, having children, and being a productive member of their society. If you have a learning disability, you will have to incorporate it into your life-plan. You will need to learn ways of handling the milestones in your life and still deal with your disability. You can lead a successful life with a little by taking some small steps.

Learning disabilities come in many forms, but usually affect how a person thinks, talks, hears, reads and writes. These problems impact how you process thoughts and perform tasks such as mathematics. Since we use these skills everyday, you will have to find ways of coping with daily tasks.

It can be extremely difficult to be an adult with a learning disability. Other adults expect you to have the same skill sets that they do and may become angry and frustrated when they have to repeatedly explain something to you. They don't realize that you need extra time to make sense of certain things. You may even drop out of classes you're taking because others don't understand your needs. Doing this will most likely jeopardize your career plans.

You need to find the balance between having a disability and changing your goals. You do need to know your limitations but at the same time there is no reason for you not to live a full and happy life. You should be able to enjoy relationships and being a parent, even with your learning disability.

Being a parent with learning disability can be tough and stressing. To reduce the stress of being a disability parent, you can do a number of things like take care of your time and manage it properly.

One of the many tricks that you can implement so that you don't forget important family information is to have a calendar prominently displayed in the kitchen or other room in your home. Keep track of dates and times when you and your children need to be somewhere. This way you have a constant visual reminder to refer to so that you don't miss appointments and pick up times.

Keep your home as organized as possible so that when you need to find something it will be in a permanent location inside your home. This ensures that you don't spend unnecessary time searching for something that you need since this can often lead to your frustration and anger.

Remember that it is very important to remain calm and patient even when things are not going the way you may want them to. Everyone, even those who don't have a learning disability will have moments that are frustrating and trying. Do not blame everything that goes wrong on your learning disability.

Get Your High School Diploma Online

A growing number of teenagers are earning their high school diplomas through the internet. Distance learning is often a great option for students who need to stay home for health reasons, desire to work at their own pace, find themselves unable to concentrate on their work in the traditional setting, or need to schedule their learning around a career (such as acting). Finding an online high school can be a challenge; many schools make big claims but few live up to their promises. Parents generally have two options for their children: private online schools or public online schools. Private online schools function much like traditional private schools, while public schools must follow national and state regulations.

Private Online High Schools
For the most part, private schools act independently of government regulation. Just like traditional private schools, they create their own regulations and have their own learning philosophy, which varies greatly from school to school. Tuition is often high since parents are charged for all costs related to their child's education, including hardware and software.

These high schools may or may not be accredited by the proper regional association. If you choose a school that is not accredited, check with the academic advisers of a few colleges to make sure that the schools' transcript will be accepted should your child apply to attend a college.

Many well-established universities are beginning to offer online high schools; these schools are probably the best bet since they are tied to credible institutions that have been around for years। A few schools to consider include.

Booking your child’s future

By Tahreem Wasti

SOME of the earliest memories I have are of my mother reading aloud to me and my sib lings from story books, and books of nursery rhymes. My imagination took such a fancy to those engrossing tales that I began weaving up stories of my own, often enacting them out through my dolls.

I began to read novels and classics, and would ask for books for my birthday presents. I remember how proud I was when my father made me a shelf for my increasing pile of books, just above my writing desk. Those quiet evenings when my mother used to read to us have resulted in my becoming what I am today - a “bookaholic”.

Numerous researches emphasize the importance of reading aloud to your child from an early age. Reading to young children is one of the very best things that parents can do for them. Infants will delight in being cuddled and hearing the calming voices of their parents, even though they don’t understand the words.

As children get older, parents can introduce them to picture books and nursery rhymes. Even at a young age, they will discover that books are read from front to back, and that pictures stand for real objects.

Peggy Gisler and Marge Eberts, who are both experienced teachers and supervisors at the Butler University Reading Centre, write in an article high lighting the advantages of parents reading aloud to children: “Reading to young children is excellent preparation for formal reading instruction in school. When you read to them, you are building pathways in their brains needed for successful reading experiences. They will be developing auditory perception that allows them to think about how words sound. Furthermore, reading stimulates children’s language development as they are like little sponges, imitating everything they hear. Listening to stories will enhance their vocabulary and help them use longer sentences.

“Another wonderful plus in reading to children is that it increases their attention span and the ability to focus to what is being said. In addition, reading makes children more curious — a trait that must be fostered in young children or they will never acquire it. And of course, their knowledge of the world will expand. More than anything else, reading to young children gives them a desire to read. Many children, who are read to when young, begin reading on their own without any formal instruction.” This awareness is fast spread ing among young parents, more so than it ever did a decade ago.

Aqsa Owais, a freelance artist currently living in London, UK, with her husband and nine month-old son, says that she takes her son, Salik, to the local library everyday.

“I know Salik is too young to absorb anything I read to him at this stage, but I want him to famil iarise himself with the environ ment I am introducing him to.

When he starts understanding things, he will see these visits as a daily routine, something which is an ordinary part of his life, and I hope it will help instill the love of reading in him.” Another young mother, Dr Ainee Kizilbash, has similar views. “I definitely believe that starting to expose children to books from a very early age and making it an important part of their lives results in a lifelong love for learning and education.

My son is now 18 months old and Illustration by Naureen Wasti comes to me with books, asking me to read them to him. I do not really expect anything in particu lar from him at this time but over the next couple of years if I can teach him how to read, I will feel very accomplished as a parent.

Reading will provide him with all the tools he needs for self learning for the rest of his life.” There are many secondary school students, however, who lack the basic appreciation for good books that makes a child a reader. Parents and teachers should both aim to help such a child make reading a permanent habit. The parents can take a number of steps to ensure that their child reads quality books. First and foremost, forcing the child to read will never instill that love for reading that is being strived for here. All that this will accomplish is that the child will see reading as a chore, an equivalent to homework. What is important is to encourage the child to read on his own accord.

Make trips to bookstores, or a nearby library, a family affair. If public libraries are not an option, make use of school libraries. Take the help of the school administration, teachers and the school librarian to ensure that the library is stocked with quality literature, such that children will enjoy reading, and at the same time, will help in awakening the child’s imagination, and in stimulating his/her mental agility. Parents should also make it a habit to carry a book with them everywhere they go, especially to places where waiting is a usual process (for example, a doctor’s appointment). Children mostly mirror their parents, and watching parents taking such interest in books will help them try to do the same.

Teachers, on the other hand, can introduce fun ways to make students enjoy reading. Recommending short stories is probably the first step, as giving a child a full-length novel to read in the first instance will act as an instant deterrent. The teacher can then encourage students to comment on how they liked the story, which parts they liked best, and which might have been better. Gradually, the teacher can introduce lengthier books, and prompting oral and written discussions on them.

Hundreds of advantages result from the development of a steady reading habit. Improved vocabulary, better writing skills, and enhanced comprehension understanding abilities are only some of the benefits mentioned above. Needless to say, it is a valuable skill to develop in oneself and one’s children. Having said this, Matilda may not look like such a fictious character anymore … minus the superpowers, that is!

Online High School Diploma Programs & Courses

A high school diploma is becoming more and more important in today's working world as a necessary step towards achieving success. In fact, according the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average high school graduate in 2002 earned approximately $717 per month more than the average person who has not completed high school. And that gap is widening: in 1979, a typical high school graduate could expect to earn an average of $444 per month more than someone without a high school diploma.

You can see the value of a high school diploma, looking at job listings today, many of which require a minimum of completion of high school. In 2004, high school graduates were 70% more likely to be employed than those without a high school diploma (BLS). Naturally, no educational program can guarantee a future salary or employment upon completion; however, having a high school diploma opens up plenty of new employment opportunities that are closed to those without a high school diploma.

What's the difference between a high school diploma and a GED? The GED is an exam comprising five areas: writing skills, social studies, science, interpreting literature, and mathematics. Completion does not give you a high school diploma; you are a "GED holder". Completion of an accredited high school program, including meeting credit requirements, results in the granting of a high school diploma; you are a "high school graduate".

What's best, completing the requirements for a high school diploma is easier than ever. Online programs can offer you the convenience of taking courses through the Internet, at your convenience, and from home. Of course, it's important to verify the accreditation of any school you're considering, to make sure your new high school diploma is worth all the work you've put into it.

Day by day …

By Amena Jafri

THERE’S a myth amongst university students that every year, each student is entitled to at least five “days”. What the “day” actually comprises is known to vary significantly but let’s just say it’s not that great.

It’s supposed to be a day that no student wants to see, nevertheless has no choice. It’s also funny how in retrospect the “day” usually happens to be one of the most vivid memories of one’s university times. It’s also amusing to note how despite its generic nature; it seems to cloud the minds of students that it only happens to them and no one else.

As I get out of bed in the morning, I just know it’s going to be a bad day. There’s this feeling in the pit of my stomach that can’t be described in any way other than being peculiar. But well, I ignore it and reprimand myself for being too superstitious.

That’s when I realise the time on my alarm clock is wrong! I’ve woken up 30 minutes later than I intended to. And seeing how every single minute of the early morning before reaching class is calculated to exact perfection in order to allow me those few extra minutes of sleep, this blatantly spells DISASTER! But, I resolutely decide, I’ll be calm and everything will work out! I’ll just substitute all my morning activities with less time-consuming alternatives of each. Simple! Now this is where the problem starts. I can’t just put on any clothes and dash out the door today. Today, of all days, I have to make a presentation in my first class which is due to start in exactly 40 minutes out of which 20 need to be devoted to my traveling time.

I manage to find some respectable attire and make myself look presentable. Lamentably, there’s no time to straighten the hair so the audience will just have to bear with the mass on my head and assume it to be a height of fashion.

So far I’m still managing to keep up with time. As I rush outside and call for the elevator, I muse how much faster it’d be if I was living on the first floor instead of the 13th! And lo behold! The elevator gets stuck on the fifth floor. Knowing the depths of the functioning of the maintenance people’s efficiency, I brace myself to climb down the five flights. With my heels [courtesy the professional presentation look] in hand, I race down as fast as I can with my laptop in hand and humungous bag on the shoulder.

Seeing how my luck is supremely lacking today, I brace myself for the impending traffic jam that I’ll undoubtedly be stuck in. But guess what, there’s none! So I happily, zoom into university completely oblivious to what fate has in store for me next.

As I head to class, I’m confident that everything will be alright and I’ll ace my presentation. All I need to do is get to class within the next three minutes otherwise I’ll be marked late and denied the chance to give my presentation. But given how fast our university elevators work, getting to the seventh floor shouldn’t take long. Unless, as I’m to later find out, on that particular day, the elevator is broken! Yes, so once again I race up seven flights to get to class before the course instructor can pass his verdict on my tardiness.

And of all the things to happen, I break my shoe as I ascend the last step. Finally, as I drag my feet to the class, I’m informed that the course instructor has taken ill suddenly and is not expected to come for another week. Hence no presentation today! It’s just been 60 minutes since I’ve woken up and I’m already exhausted. What sort of a day is this? That’s when a realisation starts to dawn; is it possible? But no, it’s just supposed to be myth. It can’t be true. The “day” is not a real concept, is it?

But as the day progresses, I begin to recognise all the signs that I had heard about and slowly the realisation settles in. It is happening. And it’s happening to me! I am having my first ever “day” today! Now, three years later, as I head closer to graduation, I still wonder whether the “day” is actually something that could be true, or is it something that we have embedded in our minds and use as an excuse for the times when we run out of luck?

But one thing is for sure; at the end of every such pressing time, I have seen myself grow in ways that I hadn’t imagined before. As we fight against obstacles, be it time, people, situations or even a bad flu at an inconvenient time, we learn. We learn to deal with our realities, not to rely on consistency of any effecting factors and to make our own destiny rather that depending on fate to take charge.

While the few years of university education hoard our brains with knowledge and information required to excel in our respective fields, there’s another force at play as well.

This force prepares us to face the challenges of life that no book prepares us for, no course can teach us about. It makes us ready to face life and spar with the challenges that will undoubtedly come our way. And I am forever thankful to it.
